“Yesterday morning, we lost my mother, Mary Beth, to Alzheimer’s disease after a decade-long battle with the illness ,” her daughter wrote on Instagram. “She was an actress, wife, sister, mother, aunt, friend, and she embraced all these roles with grace and a spirit that was never without gentleness. While we grieve, there is some comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and is now at peace with her sisters.

Born Mary Beth Supinger on September 25, 1946, in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was blessed early on by the film industry’s guardian angels; her babysitter was none other than Jean Seberg . Mary Beth studied theater at the University of Iowa and New York University before making her stage debut in 1974 in an off-Broadway production. Throughout her career, she received three Tony Award nominations (the Iowa equivalent of the Molière Awards) for her performances in The Magistrate, a three-act farce (1975), Crimes of the Heart (1981), and Benefactors (1985-1986).
Her popularity skyrocketed in 1978 when she landed her first screen role, that of Joey, in Woody Allen ‘s Interiors , alongside the late Diane Keaton . Alongside her film career, Mary Beth Hurt has guest-starred in episodes of Kojak , Thirtysomething , Saturday Night Live , and Law & Order .
