Two Police Officers Shot During Standoff With Armed Suspect in Upstate New York
Two police officers were shot Saturday during a tense standoff with an armed suspect in Syracuse after authorities say the man allegedly attacked a dog with a machete and threatened residents inside an apartment complex.
According to local reports, the incident unfolded shortly after noon in the Pioneer Homes housing area near downtown Syracuse. Police responded to emergency calls describing a man behaving erratically, menacing people, and injuring a dog with a machete before barricading himself inside an apartment.
Officers wounded during hours-long confrontation
Authorities say the suspect allegedly opened fire on responding officers during the standoff, reportedly shooting through an apartment window. Two officers suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to Upstate Medical Hospital, where they were later reported to be in stable condition. A third officer sustained a separate injury during the chaotic response.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing repeated gunfire throughout the afternoon as heavily armed police units surrounded the building.
The suspect eventually surrendered to law enforcement around mid-afternoon after several hours of negotiations, according to local media reports. Officials said he was receiving medical treatment at the scene before being taken into custody.
Large police response disrupted the city
The incident triggered a major security response across parts of Syracuse, including temporary lockdowns and traffic disruptions affecting nearby roads and portions of Interstate 81. The situation reportedly created delays and concern throughout the area during a busy graduation weekend for Syracuse University.
City officials later confirmed that the wounded officers were conscious and in “good spirits” while recovering in the hospital.
Investigation continues
Authorities have not yet publicly released the suspect’s identity or announced formal charges. Investigators are continuing to examine the sequence of events, including the reported animal attack and the shooting of officers during the standoff.
The condition of the injured dog has not yet been officially disclosed.
The case remains under active investigation as law enforcement officials gather evidence and prepare for the suspect’s expected court appearance.
