Sometimes it only takes a rusty object found in a garden to bring up memories that I thought were forgotten. That’s exactly what happened to me when I came across this strange little metal object, with a roulette wheel and a thread. Many young people do not know what it is, but for a whole generation, it was a true symbol of freedom and adventure. And if you grew up before electric bikes and LED lamps, you’ll probably recognize this object immediately.
This strange object found in the garden is not what I thought

When I first saw this object, I thought of an old piece of machine, a broken tool or even a piece of toy. However, it was actually an old bicycle dynamo.
In the past, before rechargeable lamps and modern lighting, bicycles used this small device to produce electricity and power the front headlight. No battery, no battery, nothing to recharge: it was enough to pedal.
It was simple, ingenious and almost magical when I was a kid.
The dynamo was fixed on the frame of the bike, right next to the wheel. A small castor came to stand against the tire. When you pedaled, the wheel was spinning, the roulette wheel was running too, and it was producing electricity.
This electricity directly supplied the lamp with the bicycle. The faster you cycled, the stronger the light. When we stopped, the light went out.
The small characteristic sound of the wheel-to-wheel dynamo was almost part of the journey, and I still remember it today.
For me, the bike dynamo was not just an accessory. It was almost a magical object. Having a bike with a dynamo was a bit like having a big bike.
I could ride in the evening, see the road in front of me, feel independent and go on an adventure with the friends. The beam of light on the road gave the impression of living a great adventure, even simply by going around the neighborhood.
It was a time when things were simpler: no screen, no battery to recharge, just a bike, a road and the desire to explore.
Why we hardly see it anymore

Today, these dynamos have almost disappeared. They have been replaced by rechargeable LED lamps, much more powerful and more practical. There are still modern dynamos built into the wheels, but the old dynamos with small roulette have become rare.
However, they remain a symbol of ingenuity: to produce light simply by pedaling, without external energy, just with movement.
At the time, we were not talking about ecology or renewable energy, but in the end, this system was already an example of clean and autonomous energy
A small object, but a lot of memories
What fascinates me is that such a small object can contain so many memories. For me, it’s the memory of the trips to go to school, evening walks in the summer, the first bike and the first feeling of freedom.
It’s often like this: the simplest objects are the ones that remind us of the most things. An old dynamo, an old toy, a school book, and suddenly a whole time comes back.
When objects tell stories
When my child found this object in the garden and asked me what it was, it was not just an opportunity to explain what a dynamo was for. It was also an opportunity to tell how it was before, how we lived, how we played and how we grew up.
Because at the bottom, some objects are not just objects: they are memories, stories and childhood pieces hidden in metal a little rusty..
